SIGNS YOU NEED A NEW EXTERIOR DOOR

Signs you need a new exterior door

Exterior doors take more abuse than anything else on your home. Sun, rain, salt air, and daily use wear them down faster than most homeowners realize.

  1. Drafts coming through the edges even when the door is closed and locked
  2. Visible cracks, warping, or peeling on the door surface
  3. The door sticks, drags on the threshold, or will not latch
  4. Daylight visible around the door frame or under the threshold
  5. Water leaks under or around the door after heavy rain
  6. The door feels flimsy, hollow, or insecure when closed
  7. Paint or stain is peeling, bubbling, or discolored from UV and weather
  8. Hardware is corroded, loose, or no longer locks properly

If any of these sound familiar, call (516) 867-4100. We can usually assess the situation in one visit.

OUR SERVICES

Exterior door services we offer on Long Island

Every exterior door on your home serves a different purpose. Your front entry, side door, back door, and basement access all face different conditions and need different materials.

Front Entry Doors: The focal point of your home. We install fiberglass, steel, and wood entry doors with sidelites, transoms, and decorative glass options. Custom sizes for round top and arched entries are available. Learn more at /entry-doors/.

Side and Back Doors: These doors get heavy daily use and often face direct weather. We install insulated steel and fiberglass doors with deadbolt-ready hardware, weatherstripping, and proper threshold seals.

Basement and Utility Doors: Basement entries need moisture resistance and security. We install steel and fiberglass doors with proper drainage, flashing, and locking hardware for below-grade access points.

French Doors (Exterior): Double doors that swing open for a wide entry to your yard, patio, or deck. Available in fiberglass and wood with multi-point locking systems.

Double Entry Doors: Two full-size doors for a grand entryway. We reinforce the frame and install flush bolts, astragals, and deadbolts for full security.

Exterior Door Frame Replacement: When the frame is rotted, warped, or out of square, we replace the entire unit down to the studs. New frame, new threshold, new door, properly flashed and sealed for Long Island weather.

 FAQ

Common questions about Exterior Doors

How much does a new exterior door cost on Long Island?

Exterior door pricing depends on material, style, glass inserts, hardware, and whether the frame needs replacing. A steel exterior door with installation typically starts around $800 to $1,500. Fiberglass doors from ProVia start higher depending on finish and glass options. We provide a free written estimate at your home so you know the exact price before any work begins.

What is the best material for an exterior door on Long Island?

Fiberglass is the most popular choice. It resists dents, rot, warping, and salt air corrosion better than wood. Steel is the most affordable and most secure. Wood looks classic but needs more maintenance, especially on the South Shore where moisture and UV exposure are higher. We carry all three materials and can show you samples at our Freeport showroom.

How long does exterior door installation take?

Most single exterior door replacements are completed in one day. If the frame needs to be torn out and rebuilt, it may take a second day. We give you a clear timeline during the in-home estimate.

Is fiberglass better than steel for an exterior door?

Fiberglass costs more but resists dents and corrosion better than steel. It also insulates better and can be stained to look like real wood. Steel is stronger, more affordable, and offers the highest security rating. For Long Island’s salt air and weather, fiberglass tends to hold up longer with less maintenance.

Do you replace the door frame too?

If the frame is solid and square, we install the new door into the existing frame. If the frame is rotted, warped, or damaged, we replace the entire unit including the frame, threshold, and weatherstripping. We check this during the free estimate.

Are your installers licensed and insured?

Yes. Mikita Door & Window is a licensed home improvement contractor, EPA Lead Safe Certified, and fully insured with workers’ compensation and general liability coverage.

Will a new exterior door improve my energy efficiency?

Significantly. Old exterior doors with worn weatherstripping and thin cores are major sources of energy loss. A properly sealed, insulated fiberglass or steel door eliminates drafts and reduces heat transfer. On Long Island, where electricity rates average 27 cents per kWh and run 35% above the national average, this makes a measurable difference on your monthly bill.

Can I get a custom-sized exterior door for a non-standard opening?

Yes. Many Long Island homes, especially older Colonial, Tudor, and Cape Cod styles, have non-standard door openings. We custom-order doors to your exact measurements from ProVia, Pella, and Andersen.

Do you install exterior doors on homes built before 1978?

es. We are EPA Lead Safe Certified and follow all federally required lead-safe work practices when replacing doors on older homes. This includes containment, cleanup protocols, and proper disposal. No additional charge.

What is the difference between an entry door and an exterior door?

An entry door is your front door. An exterior door is any door that separates your home’s interior from the outside, including front, side, back, basement, and garage-to-house doors. We install all types of exterior doors. If you are looking specifically for front door options, see our entry doors page at https://mikitadoorandwindow.com/entry-doors/
